This is exciting for so many reasons: it is probably the product that has taken the longest to get to this point, it is the first pattern that we have shared with the world, and it is super cute! Are you ready to get hooked?
We wanted to design a pattern that would be accessible for most skill levels, using chunky yarn to make the project quick and easy. Our pattern explains each process step-by-step and includes photos to help any skill level create their own Nelly. After years of following patterns that called for expensive yarns in tiny weights, I thought I would have a go at making a project that can be created satisfyingly quickly, in cheap and durable yarn. Because who really wants to spend a small fortune on a gift or wants a children’s toy you can’t wash?
All the materials needed for this project should be easy to source and easy to swap out for alternative brands and colours, depending on what you may already have or your local craft shop stocks. We used Hayfield Bonus Chunky in Light Grey Mix as the main body of this project, as we found it to be cheap, durable and still a nice feeling yarn to work with and a snuggly product as a result. The embroidery for the finishing touches can be competed with a small amount of black and white yarn, so its likely that a lot of you will already have some lying around.
You'll also need some stuffing to give your elephant its shape. Polyester fiberfill is a popular choice for amigurumi projects like this. It's soft, lightweight, and can be easily manipulated to fill in all the nooks and crannies of your elephant. I prefer to use recycled toy stuffing, which is 100% recycled polyester, but you can use any stuffing you prefer.
Nelly will make the perfect gift for both adults and children. She is a cute addition to any nursery, the best birthday present and a perfect pick-me-up. What’s even better is that she is handmade by you!
