Welcome to my first blog post – hopefully the first of many to come.
I am Ellen, the creator behind Creations by Ellen, a tiny business hand making crochet items since 2019. I crochet everything from cushions, to penguins that cover a chocolate orange at Christmas. Alongside a full-time job, family, hobbies and everything else life brings, my side hustle has grown each year, so why not start a blog as well?
I guess I should start with: what is crochet? My first answer to this question is always ‘it is not knitting’. Crochet is the professed less refined cousin of knitting, but in my opinion more diverse and definitely easier craft, where instead of passing the yarn between two needles, crochet uses a hook of various sizes to work making loops along whatever your project is.
I got into crochet when I was around 18 and in the midst of my a-levels. I decided procrastination was the best thing to do and that distracting myself with a new skill would be a useful thing to do instead of revising. Crochet was the perfect diversion. I made a few squares and a wonky scarf, then annoyingly my studies got in the way. In 2019 I rediscovered my love of the craft, then a global pandemic gave me even more time to practice and the rest is history – or at least documented thoroughly on Instagram.
So, here’s to 2023. May it treat us all well and hopefully be the year I get organised, start writing up my patterns and most likely make more silly videos of myself on the internet.
